Historic silent film showcasing antisemitism concerns to be screened in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The rise of antisemitism and hate campaigns is highlighted in Present Music’s 2023-24 season with a rare U.S. screening of the silent film, “The City Without Jews (Die Stadt ohne Juden)."

Originally believed to be lost, the film resurfaced at a Parisian flea market in 2015 and subsequently underwent digital restoration.

The local screening is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m., with discussions beginning at 6 p.m. in the Milwaukee Art Museum's Lubar Auditorium.

The 1924 Austrian film by Hans Karl Breslauer presents a forewarning of the Holocaust events. Accompanying the film is a new score by Austrian composer Olga Neuwirth, performed live by the Present Music ensemble under the baton of Yaniv Dinur.

Further details, including the schedule of events surrounding the film's screening, are accessible at Present Music's website.
